he was not a titanic man and he knew it . not by chance he aovided most of wagner and his bruckner was highly selective, lyrical adn mystic. in beethoven, he converted himself to originalism but in a very personal way. he was excelent in modern music , combinig analytical abilities wit an intuitive approach. in mahler , his intuition helped him to give a sense of unity to the symphonies of the viennese master. he was a great condcutor of french music. his lyricism could fit brahms , but not always, when a more dramatic stance was needed. his verdi was highly original and greatest in the most intimate moments. his ballo was perhaps the best recording of the opera ( pace his master, votto).music was always for him a matter of exploring new ways with good taste.
