Wagner’s dogs were his pride and joy. During his Swiss sojourn in the 1850s, his two dogs, Russ and Koss, accompanied him on his daily walks to Lucerne to collect his post. One of them, Russ, is buried at the master’s feet in Bayreuth, where Wagner’s dog-whip is on display in the museum. At one time Wagner used to play whatever he’d written to his adored King Charles spaniel Pep for his approval.
